How to Become a Professional Organizer

Professional Organizer Salary

We all know that if we just “got organized” everyday tasks would not be so cumbersome, we could find what it is we are looking for, and could get more accomplished; but it is just so overwhelming, where do you start?

As a Professional Organizer I get asked that question a lot. So I thought about it and remember something I learned in a training course for facilitation and resolution. You must first define the problem before you can solve the problem. That means more than just saying, “It’s a mess.” Really think about the specifics of the problem. For example,

There are too many piles of paper on the dining room table.

I don’t have anywhere to put my stuff when I walk in the door.

I can’t find the tools I need when I am working in the kitchen/garage/office/craft room.

Be specific and list them all. These are not judgments merely statements of facts about your space and habits.

Another great activity to get you going is to write down your goals for each space that is troublesome. Really think about what you want to accomplish in that room. It can be relaxation, productivity, or anything you want. Follow the SMART goal format: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and have a Timeline. To help you define those smart goals write down all the activities you do in that area or if you can’t currently do them, list what you would like to be doing in that space. For example, if setting up a home office, you could list: pay bills, send emails, organize taxes, send correspondence, etc. this is an important step that will lead to the next steps of setting up that new efficient space in your home.

Of course, if all this still sounds too daunting to do on your own, call a Professional Organizer who will help you get through these steps and the next and on your way to feeling great and organized
